Oral Language and Learning

In the spirit of starting the new school year, we wanted to share some information about the relationship between oral language and learning.

Did You Know:

  • Speech-Language Specialists work on listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Speaking and listening are natural developmental occurrences while reading and writing require explicit instruction.
  • Children learn to navigate a complex system of oral (spoken) language that includes phonological (sound) components, semantics (meaning) and syntax (grammar). They must also negotiate the rules and situations when language is used.
  • Oral language (speaking) is the essential foundation for thinking, communicating and all aspects of literacy, including reading and writing.
