  • Newmark Annual Fund 2020

Thank you to all of the Newmark families who have made a generous donation to the 2020 Annual Fund to support the special programs and services that are the hallmark of Newmark. Our campaign goal is 100% parent participation.

This year we need your help more than ever before.

Understanding that we serve a unique population of students, we have gone above and beyond to create systems and procedures to keep our students and staff as healthy and safe as possible in these times of COVID-19.

As you can imagine, we had additional expenses for items such as masks, hand sanitizing stations, a professional disinfecting crew, plexiglass safety guards, as well as cutting-edge tracking devices that provide data for contract tracing purposes, student computer devices, an additional school nurse, just to name a few.

Learn more and make a donation today.  Thank you on

  • Selective Service - Registration for Men 18-25

Selective Service registration is required by law as the first part of a fair and equitable system that, if authorized by the President and Congress, would rapidly provide personnel to the Department of Defense while at the same time providing for an Alternative Service Program for conscientious objectors. By registering, a young man remains eligible for jobs, Federal student aid, State-based student aid in 31 states, Federally-funded job training, and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Who Must Register with Selective Service
    • Almost all men age 18-25 who are U.S. citizens or are immigrants living in the U.S. are required to be registered with Selective Service. U.S. law calls for citizens to register within 30 days of turning 18 and immigrants to register within 30 days of arriving in the U.S.

  • Preparing Your Child For School

Here's what you can do to prepare your family for September:

    • Purchase a thermometer. The CDC recommends parents screening children prior to sending them to school each day.  You will be expected to fill out an online survey/questionnaire each day your child will attend school and a temperature check will be part of that survey.
    • Purchase or make several well-fitted, comfortable, washable face masks.  Our school nurse has recommended 3 ply cloth face masks face coverings that may be more comfortable for younger students.  Your child will need to wear a face mask to school daily and one that is properly fitted to their face (no 'vent' masks or bandanas).  Masks should be washed daily.  Of course, if your child is unable to wear a face covering for medical reasons, please contact us immediately.
    • Work on building mask stamina with your children.  This is one of the most important steps we can take for everyone's safety. Mask wearing will be part of the academic day and the more children practice, the more comfortable they will be wearing masks.
    • Continue to reinforce healthy habits at home. Hand washing, covering sneezes and coughs, and self monitoring for symptoms are all proactive habits we can develop to ensure the health and well-being of our school community.
Remember, once the school year starts, if your child shows signs or symptoms of illness, please keep your child home from school.

  • Newmark Student Achieves Top ACT Score!

Ian Hopkins, a rising senior at Newmark High School, earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36.

Fewer than half of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2019, only 4,879 out of nearly 1.8 million students who took the ACT earned a top composite score of 36.

The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1–36. A student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. The score for ACT’s optional writing test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. Students who earn a 36 composite score have likely mastered all of the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in first-year college courses in the core subject areas.

Congratulations to Ian and his proud family from all of us at Newmark!!!

  • Video: What you and your child can expect while onsite at Newmark

Newmark was approved by the Department of Health to have students on site for several days during our Extended School Year Program. This week, we will bring our K-8 ESY students back to campus and reacclimate them with staff, students and the facility. Then next week we'll bring NHS ESY students onsite to begin practicing the safety protocols we have in place for September.
A detailed letter was mailed last week with clear screening and safety guidelines outlined. In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we need parents to clearly follow the NEW protocols for pre-screening and dropping off / picking up your child along with the school building safety protocols.

  • Counseling Tip - Self-care

our tips will focus on self-care. Normally we think of summertime as the season to let go a bit, live easy and relax. Although this summer will be different in significant ways, it is still a great time to acknowledge the need to unwind and take care of ourselves.

Self-care is becoming a popular topic in the media – for good reason. As parents, we can easily get caught up in the daily grind and de-prioritize our own needs. True self-care is an intentional decision to not only maintain our own health and wellness, but to make mindful changes in recurring thoughts and behaviors that have a negative impact on our welfare.

  • Counseling Tips - Staying Grounded

Covid-19 seems to present answers and questions simultaneously: School will open, but what will it look like? Pools and playgrounds will be open, but how does one social distance in a pool? The school year is over, but now what do we do to keep busy?

Staying grounded in the present moment is the key to managing unknowns, questions and an ever-changing new normal.  View this guided mindfulness meditation to use as a tool at home to ease stress and tension.

Structure continues to be crucial, but summertime structure allows for flexibility, rest and relaxation. Nina Essel, a therapist and parent coach, suggests breaking the day into three categories: Nonnegotiables (i.e. shower and brush teeth each day); things you want to see happen (i.e. spend at least an hour a day outside); and things you would like to see happen (i.e. kids unload the dishwasher each day). Having your child involved in the process of identifying the activities is helpful and adds to the likelihood that the activity list will be more successful.

  • Helping Handle the Loss of Proms and Graduations

Here is a fantastic article from Greater Good Magazine by Christine Carter, Ph.D. , Helping Handle the Loss of Proms and Graduations. It gives us some helpful steps and strategies about managing emotions. The article’s title is focused on teens, but the content easily applies to all ages – elementary students through adults.

Loss of rituals, traditions, the end result of hard work (performances, showcases, sports seasons, scouting trips and events, graduation), routines, and closure of one stage and a fresh beginning to a new one. It will be important to help our children mourn their losses so they can get to a place of acceptance and move forward. The article included here gives us four great tools do to so: Acknowledge the loss, Name the feelings, Teach about grief, and Help find meaning.

  • NHS Variety Show Brings House Down

Last Friday night, NHS brought the audience back in time as they performed a variety of skits starting with the roaring 20’s and ending with 2020. Newmark's students have grown over the years showing that not only can they be comical, but showed the ability to do serious acting  and serious moments. Students and staff were touched seeing the 1960’s skit, Vietnam Letters, read by students portraying soldiers. The night ended with the whole audience singing and dancing to the YMCA.

2020 Extended School Year (ESY) Eligibility

Newmark K-8 and High School provides an Extended School Year (ESY) Program for our students who are eligible through your local school district.  In order to be eligible for ESY, it must be agreed upon by the IEP Team which includes you, your school district Child study team and Newmark. The determination is made at the annual IEP meeting.
This year, as in past years, we require that parents and school districts confirm if their student will be attending ESY no later than May 1, 2020. We cannot guarantee placement into the ESY program after that date. Because your student attends Newmark does not make them automatically eligible for ESY. If your student attended last year, they should qualify. To clarify:
If you have already had your IEP meeting and it was decided your student is attending ESY, then you don't need to do anything. Please read important letter from Dr. Peter, Executive Director

2020 ESY Dates:  Wednesday, July 1 through Friday, July 24, 2020
