Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. Characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in specific areas of development, ASD can include impairments in reciprocal social interaction skills or communication skills. There may also be the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and/or activities. Individuals with ASD are also known to engage in a range of self-stimulating behaviors, such as hand flapping or head banging.
Many of the individuals with ASD will want to have social interactions, but really struggle with the social skills needed to be successful. These students may be quite easy and enjoyable in class due to their need to follow rules and please adults. However, they often have severe social conflict, and can be the victim of bullies and other students who notice their deficits. Rigidity and inflexibility can present many functional and social challenges as well.

In a school setting:

  • Social Interaction Impairments: These may include poor conversational skills, difficulty managing eye contact, an inability to read social cues, personal space issues and rigidity in play.
  • Sensory Issues: Students may feel that there is too much noise, stimulation that may cause a behavioral response.
  • Behavior Impairments: Students may have intense focus on specific interests and the facts associated with that interest. They may also demonstrate rigid thought patterns, repetitive behaviors, meltdowns/rages, and perseveration.
  • Language Impairments: These may include monotone or unusual inflection, difficulty modulating volume, repetitive speech patterns, and difficulty understanding situational language or humor.
